Secondary Research – BARB viewing figures

What is the show’s title?

The title of the show is "Extreme OCD Camp" which showcases the lives of people who have severe OCD problems. There are 6 people who come from the UK who go to america where they will be rinsed of their OCD problems and help them with their current ordeal. The show goes over all of their very strange obsessions, and then tries to go through many tasks to help these 6 individuals deal with their OCD.

What is the show’s channel, broadcast day and time slot?

The channel that made and broadcasts the show is "BBC THREE". The shows broadcast day is Friday the 11th of October 2013, and the time slot is 8:00.

What are the show’s viewing figures for the past week?

The documentary viewing figures ranged from 100 to 300 views this past week, this may be because the show is not as popular in the United Kingdom, as it is in any other country around the world.
What similarities does the show’s format and content have with your own?

The show does go over certain obsessions that these 6 people have, which is very similar to what our documentary is going over. We are planning on going over many different obsessions people have, but we are going to explain why they have these obsessions rather than helping them deal with their obsessions.

How would your show beat it in terms of viewing figures?

Our show will beat it in viewing figures cause our show will go over many interesting facts that are not included in this show, and our show will go over a lot of addictions that a lot of people could relate to, and show if they are harmful or not, because of this our show might seem a lot more interesting to watch for the audience, and they would want to watch our documentary instead of this show.

Watch Fish! A Japanese Obsession in Educational & How-To  |  View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com

What is the show’s title?

'Fish! a Japanese obsession' is about a man named Charles Rangeley-Wilson who travels to Japan and learn why Japan has an odd fascination for fish and how it has become an iconic obsession to them. While a lot of people do wonder what fuels japans weird obsessions, not many of them are able to fly over to Japan

What is the show’s channel, broadcast day and time slot?

The show first aired on BBC Four on Monday the 23rd of March 2009 at 21:00. The other times that it has aired on TV was Tuesday the 24th of March 2009 at 01:05, Sunday the 29th of March 2009 at 00:00, Sunday the 5th of April 2009 at 22:00 and Monday the 12th of November 2012 at 23:10. All times it was aired was on BBC Four.
What are the show’s viewing figures for the past week?

When looking up the viewing figures for the documentary in Japan, there has been around 500 people who have viewed it in the past week. This kind of documentary would be quite interesting for people overseas to watch, whereas the Japanese audience would find this relatively normal.

What similarities does the show’s format and content have with your own?

This show goes over the obsession that many people in Japan have, which is fish, since this goes over the  topic of obsessions people have, which is a very similar topic that our documentary is going to go over, except we are going to look at addictions and obsessions in general, rather than just one

How would your show beat it in terms of viewing figures?

Our documentary would seem a lot more interesting to watch for the audience instead of this show, because that this show only goes over the huge obsession over fish that occurs in Japan, which seems like an interesting topic, but our documentary will go over many different obsessions that people could have, rather than just one, which would be a more enjoyable show to watch for the audience.

What is the show’s title?

The title of the show is "OCD: The War Inside" which is about the disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, also known as OCD. This show goes over the daily lives of people that live with OCD, and how the anxiety disorder is misunderstood. It goes over how the disorder is a very painful thing to live with and how it is like a war every day.

What is the show’s channel, broadcast day and time slot?

While the broadcast is not specified on the internet, this documentary was uploaded on to YouTube on the 18th of October 2014. As we were searching for the broadcast date, we could not find any mention of it on Google.
What are the show’s viewing figures for the past week?

The shows viewing figures for the past week were shown to be around 100 to 200 views. We had checked the analytics of the video on YouTube and it has clearly stated that there has been around 100 to 200 views, as there is no clear evidence of when it was first broadcasted on live television.

What similarities does the show’s format and content have with your own?

Both ideas are very similar to each other since this show goes over OCD and how it is a terrible thing to live with, which is very similar to our show, but we will go over addictions that people have, and how they can be very harmful to peoples lives.

How would your show beat it in terms of viewing figures?

Our documentary would beat this show in viewing figures since our documentary goes over a very similar topic, but it will be much more lighthearted, and the documentary will go over a lot more facts about obsessions that was not included in this show, so people would want to watch our documentary instead.

Proposal

Aims

The aim that my documentary is going for is that it is trying to let the audience learn about the many different obsessions that people have, and how many are very harmless, but at the same time many are very harmful, to people and can leave a big impact on their lives. We are planning to include interviews which will let us be able to give information to the audience that they can not simply find on the internet. We are planning to teach the audience many things, such as what an obsession actually is, what kinds of obsessions there are, why people spend so much time and money on them, why people enjoy their obsessions, and if they think they need help dealing with their obsessions. These are questions not many people ask, which means not many people really know the answers to these questions

Content

In my documentary the makers of the documentary would be going around talking to the audience about how obsessions can be a big deal in someones life, then they will go around to there many people with very different obsessions, and they will talk about how much of an impact this obsession has left on their life, if it is just a simple hobby, or if it is an addiction. These people with obsessions will be interviewed, saying if their obsession is fun and positive, or if its an obsession that they wish they could stop.

Target Audience

The target audience for my documentary would be people around the age of 16-24 who are British males and females, I am not focusing on any ethnicity's. Many people around the age of 16-24 have obsessions and obsessions effect many young people, such as young people being obsessed with celebrities, going on the internet, playing games, etc, but many of these people are not aware on how obsessions can lead to something much worse.

Format

The format we have decided to go through with is the 'Performative' Documentary. For this kind of subject, we decided to have the presenter interact with the people who have the obsessions. We had imagined that the presenter would go into the field and go through what kind of obsessions and the details of the obsession. When interviewing someone with the obsession, camera would mostly be tracking the presenter as we want the shots to be as exciting as possible so the audience can immerse themselves in it as well. When interviewing some of the obsessed people, I want them to indulge in their obsessions as we are talking so we can get an insight into how their obsession takes over them.

Genre

The genre of this documentary that we are creating is more along the lines of a participatory mode because the presenter will be taking part in the documentary and will be indulging in the lives of the of people with the obsessions. I have thought about bringing this documentary into different genres like observational or observational  because they would bring the topic of obsessions into a new light but this has been done already so instead, I thought of showcasing the more bizarre obsessions to the world because it would be better showing the audience something new rather than 'water the dead flower' meaning that I don't contribute to making the same thing that other people

Style

The style of the documentary will include a range of professional shots, graphics, videos and images because this is what a documentary consists of. Since the documentary that I will be creating will be a participatory mode, the documentary mode would contain hints of comedy as the presenter tries to indulge in the activities with the obsessed individual. While there are hints of comedy in the documentary, I will try and make the documentary very serious because the topic I have chosen isn't going to be taken lightly. The documentary will carry a formal tone to it because I want to dive into the topic, telling all of the facts to the viewers about what obsession is and how it could possibly corrupt someone's life, including OCD, which can be quite serious,

Secondary Research - Legal and Ethical Concerns

Constraint
Describe the details of constraint
Explain how the constraint will directly impact on your documentary
The main concern when filming in the public domain is that I will need to ask for permission when filming on someone’s property because I may not be allowed to film on their property.
This may impact our development of our documentary because people may want us to stop filming on their property
Clearances and Permissions

http://www.wkwsci.ntu.edu.sg
When filming outside in the public, there may be some areas where someone may need to ask for permission from the owners because we may not be able to film on their property.
When filming my documentary, we may film in certain areas of London that could be privately owned by other people and we will need to ask for permission from the owners to proceed filming.
If we would go into some ones online personal accounts and research their life to find information, it isn’t allowed at all. This is because, even if you are a good or bad person, interviewers aren’t allowed to go through people personal information without consent.
If we were look into some one’s personal life and their details of their obsessions without their consent, we would be violating this rule. When researching into someone’s obsessions, we will ask for permission in written form so there are repercussions later.
Libel an Defamation Law

https://en.wikipedia.org
This is where someone releases information about another individual which ruins their image. While committing this act isn’t a crime, It is looked down on in society because it could destroy someone’s reputation.
When looking into someone’s obsessions, we asked our interviewee’s if they could pick an obsession which would be suitable four our audience and not something too grotesque or lewd. This is because we don’t want to ruin their image and for them to face any backlash due to our actions.
BBC editorial guideline 1

http://www.bbc.co.uk/
The BBC editorial guidelines state that they put the audience first so therefore, BBC will have to put responsibility over freedom of expression. This means that the BBC have to respect the audiences privacy
When we are filming outside we will make sure to blur out any voices or any faces of people included in the documentary, that do not want to be in the documentary.
BBC editorial guideline 2

http://www.bbc.co.uk
This is when the BBC makes sure that they meet up to the potentials of the audience and makes content that is challenging and typical and reaches ethical standards
When we make our documentary, while editing it we will make sure that it reaches the standards the audience would want it to be so that they can enjoy it more. When making the documentary we will provide the information very clearly so that the audience will understand the topic better.
BBC editorial guideline 3

http://www.bbc.co.uk
This is when the content shown in the documentary should be gathered using only a first hand source and it should contain only primary research and not contain any secondary research. This will make the documentary contain information that the audience could not just simply find on the internet.
When making our documentary, we will be making it a performative documentary which is when the maker of the documentary has to collect the information and all of the content is primary research.
The first guideline is when the content placed in the documentary that may contain people that have mental or physical damage, and must be under the age of 18.
When making our documentary we will make sure that every one in the audience is under the age of 18, which means that we will have to think about what kind of things we can show in the documentary that will not leave an effect on an audience of that age.

The second guideline is to do with the radio and television side, where they protect some of the people they are in the documentary from the public so they wont get harmed.
When making our documentary we will make sure that the film makers do not harm anyone in public while going out getting the information, and we will make sure that no people that will be interviewed gets harmed in the documentary.

The third guideline, just like guideline 2 it is related to radio and television. It is when a documentary should not include information that makes individuals, religions, groups of people, etc in a negative way.
When making our documentary we will  make sure that we do not show any of the people that we are interviewing in a negative manor, as in we will not mock them on their obsessions and just learn facts about their obsessions.
