Codes and Conventions of Factual TV programming


Docu Drama 

A docu drama is a type of documentary that mixes with dramas, and focuses on facts of real events that happened, but are not always accurate, since they usually have characters pretending to be people that were actually in the event that they were focusing on.



This docu drama focuses on the Ebola virus, and tries to make a suspenseful story based on the topic. At the beginning they use dramatic music to build tension, this is also shown at 0:23 where there is a lot of  different clips, which will help grab the audiences attention, to make them curious about what is going on, by doing this it makes the audience curious and want to continue watching to see what is going to happen to find out that they don't give the answer. The people who made this trailer tried to add as much tension as possible, they show this at 0:37 when they do fast pace editing, showing all of the problems going on, by showing all of the serious parts of the Docu drama, it will make the audience want to know how the movie will end, to see if it will end happily or have a sad ending. There are many moments in this trailer that has framing which shows serious reactions, along side the music, this builds more tension to what is happening, they show this at 0:18. By showing the audience all of these serious reactions, it tells the audience how to feel, and this docu drama is supposed to be taken very seriously, which will make the audience understand that it has a serious tone and will feel the same way that they see how the characters in the Docu drama feel.

Docu Soap

A docu soap is a type of documentary that is based on real people's lives in situations such as just living their normal life, but try to make it entertaining for the audience to watch, they create many characters and story lines.



In this docu soap starts off straight away at 0:01 with the fast paced editing to show that there is a lot going, this could get the audience excited to watch the docu soap, since they show all of the interesting parts straight away which will show the audience what is coming up. It will possibly answer some questions for people wanting to know what will happen in the episode, and it will give the audience something to look forward to. After the intro at 0:54 they start the actual start to the show with very calming music. By having this choice of music, it helps start off with a calming mood, which will make the audience relaxed. At 9:68 they change the music, which also changes the mood, since they show the family having a serious meeting whilst arguing, so they decide to use upbeat music, to get the audience excited to see what happens. In this Docu soap since they are focusing on the lives of these family members they do a lot of interviews to show what the family members have to say about what is happening, such as throughout the whole Docu drama there are a lot of interviews with the mother at 3:13 and 8:21, by doing this they inform the audience about what certain characters feel like in certain situations, the interviews that they show tell us that the mother is tired of his son being stressed and think that the situation is not that bad.

Infotainment 

Infotainment is a type of documentary that focuses on programming that also includes entertaining content to try to be popular with consumers and audiences. This may incorporate competitions and phone ins to keep people entertained.



In this infotainment the sound quality that they use is not that good and is very poor, by having low quality sound, it makes the infotainment sound old, you start to notice at 0:40 that both the sound and lighting are very low quality, by having very low quality sound and lighting, it does not make the infotainment very enjoyable for the audience, since they can just rather watch another infotainment that has higher quality sound and lighting. The choice of music they use for the intro at 0:02 is very cheerful, which will get the audience to be very relaxed and having cheerful music at the beginning, they start the audience with a positive mood, to make them want to see the rest of the show thinking it is going to be positive and cheerful just like the music. The use of editing at 0:40 is very smooth, showing all of the food, which could get the audience hungry and could possibly interest those who are interested in food, by seeing all this smooth editing and showing all of the food, it would make them hungry and relaxed at the same time, and they would want to see more.

Reality TV 

Reality television shows to the audience situations that they might find humorous, they show actual events and usually features normal people who often become celebrities in their own rights, but sometimes it includes professional actors. The editing is usually done to good standards, and contains characters and narratives



In this Reality TV show they use very upbeat music at 0:22 to grab the audiences attention and to get the audience excited to see what happens next. They stop the music at 1:15 to add a little bit of tension, to get the audience wondering if the clothes are actually in the barn, and when they find out that they actually are, they add the music again, which adds humour to the scene since with the upbeat music it helps the audience get into a positive mood. In all reality TV shows they use interviews with the people in the show, such as at 0:23 they show how exactly one of the characters feel about their clothes not being in the closet. By showing their opinions and their point of view, it will show how exactly these characters feel, which will let the audience know how exactly to feel when watching the show. A lot of the time in reality TV shows they use hand healed camera. You start to notice them using hand held camera at moments like 0:14 where you start to notice that the camera is shaking, you also notice this at 2:07 when they are looking at the dog. The reason why they use handheld camera when filming these type of shows is that it makes it look like the audience is looking around, such as when they were looking at the dog, when watching it, it makes it look like the audience looked down at the dog. This type of filming can be both a positive and a negative, since it sometimes can make the show look more exciting, but it can also make it look less professional.

Educational Television

Educational Television is a type of programme that mainly focuses on educating their audience with certain topics such as morals and they teach life lessons through what the characters go through in the story. These types of programmes tend to be very factual and tries to mainly teach their audience.



In this educational television show they use music that would fit in with certain times in history, an example of this was at 0:50 where they used flute music that would fit in with medieval times. By using music that fitted with the time they are setting the story on, it helps fit in with the video, and it sets a certain mood for the audience. The use of voice over and the presenter, is made to be very humorous, since they have a drunk man doing the voice over in a funny voice to make the audience laugh. With the voice over the actors playing the people in medieval times do over exaggerated reactions when talking, so that they talk just like the drunk narrator, we notice this at 1:29 and at 2:44, by doing this it adds more humour to the scene, which will make the audience enjoy it more. The editing done in this show is done very fast when it comes to the conversations, we notice this at 2:16 where the queen and Sir Walter Raleigh were having a conversation, they switch from shot to shot to make sure that the audience can see all of the reactions.

Wildlife Documentary 

A Wildlife Documentary is a type of of documentary that mainly focuses on animals, plants and non human living creatures. These type of documentaries typically have a white male voice over, and are usually taken seriously. They mainly do their filming in animals natural habitats to get the best shots of how they are in the wild.



In this wildlife documentary they focus the camera on all of the dangerous animals at 2:08. They show all of the dangerous animals with the camera to get the audience frightened and anxious while watching. It builds tension which makes the audience curious wanting to know what happens next. The presenter/voiceover is very well educated American and has a voice that has slow pace and adds tension when talking about the danger of the animals, we notice this at 2:51 where the voice over makes the audience feel tense while watching, having such a slow paced, tense voice while looking at such dangerous animals makes the audience even more anxious. In most wildlife documentaries they use hand held camera most of the time, we see this at 8:33 where they were holding the camera without a tripod, having the camera slightly shaking and at low level with the creatures shows how difficult it is to film these creatures, which could seem exciting for the viewer, since the animals they show are not very common to occur.

Special Interest Documentary

A special interest documentary is a type of documentary that is a traditional styled doccumentary that tried to appeal to a very specific audience. These type of documentaries try to use many traditional documentary conventions to seem like an actual documentary, they rarely seem to be shown on broadcasters that are mainstream, and focuses on one story per episode, and has a completely different story in the next.



In this documentary they start at 0:01 with very slow camera movement to start off with a calm tone, this nicely welcomes the viewer with multiple shots that helps relax the viewer, since the slow movements of the camera, showing fascinating sights of nature, it helps get the viewer watching relaxed straight away. This documentary has a lot of different types of music used in it, such as at 1:27 they have very calm music, to set a relaxing tone for the viewer, and at 2:01 they have very uplifting music, to build excitement for when the actual beginning of the show starts. The use of music helps build a lot of emotions for the viewer, which helps make the documentary much more enjoying to watch. At 0:07 they show a montage of a lot of different clips, of peaceful sights, which seems pleasing to watch for the viewer, the amount of clips shown seems entertaining to watch for the viewer even if you are not a canal enthusiast.

Make Over Show

Make over shows are type of shows that seem like reality TV shows where people from the public have their life changed into something even better, this comes in many forms, new home designs, new life style, new appearance, etc. These type of shows most of the time involves someones physical appearance or may involve some issue that is in their life, usually each episode focuses on one person and has a host that is an expert. These types of shows usually end with a happy ending with all problems solved.



At 0:02 they use music that is very fast pace, since there is a lot going on, as the host Gordon Ramsey moves everything around in the restaurant. By using music that is so fast paced it builds excitement straight away, which gets the viewer excited while watching the show knowing something interesting is going to happen. At 1:23 they use music that makes a sad tone, mainly because it shows the restaurant owner starting to get upset, this builds up emotions for the audience watching since they start to notice that he is going to cry, with the sad music added in the background, it could get the audience emotional as well. They have a use of experts by having their host being Gordon Ramsey, who states that he knows a lot about how restaurants are supposed to look like, he says at 2:29 that he made a lot of changes to the restaurant, to make the restaurant look very vibrant and full of energy. They use handheld camera through the whole show, at 1:53 they use hand held camera to look at everything, such as the new sign for the restaurant and the restaurant owners reactions. Using handheld camera makes it look like the viewer is looking around, and they are actually in the scene, which makes the show pleasing to watch.


Discussion

A discussion show is a studio panel show where they have experts talk about issues on a certain topic or theme. Sometimes they include a live studio audience. These type of shows usually have a tone that is fairly serious and they sometimes deal with topics that are serious. They talk about topics that are up to date and relevant so that the audience will be interested.




In this discussion show at 0:01 they do an interview with one of the wrestlers talking about how they feel from coming back from a serious injury and seeing so many new wrestlers, which helps inform the viewer to know what exactly it is like coming back to work and then seeing a lot of new people around you that you haven't seen, they are informed that it was very exciting to see. The use of editing in this discussion show contains very few cuts, but they are noticeable, such as at 0:24 they cut showing a separate screen with a highlight to tell the viewer what they are talking about, and at 0:55 they cut right back to what the shot was like before, it runs very smoothly and makes the viewer enjoy the show even more. At 1:09 they start to use handheld camera movement, showing a lot happening, with the person getting interviewed being attacked by another wrestler, since they used handheld camera movement they were able to show everything that was happening, such as where both of the wrestlers were being moved to, and seeing them fight, this helps build excitement to the show.

Review Show

Review shows are a types of television programs that only review a new type of product. These shows usually involve a presenter doing a product test or trying out a product. They could involve a presenter doing a voice over review over archive footage or they could include the presenter actually with the product, reviewing it.



At 0:05 they use poor sound quality to show that the phone is very old, and informs the viewers that the phone was made a very long time ago, which explains why it does not have sound quality that is as good as phones that we have today. They use a very high class British man to do a voice over at 1:06 which describes that there is tape recorder that links up, they have an intelligent sounding man so that it sounds like someone that the viewer can trust for them to give them accurate facts that they can believe are true. At 3:51 you start to notice they have a use of sound that is very calming with the birds in the background, this gets the viewer relaxed, and they showed all the sounds of the phone to tell the viewer that the phone is actually working.


Chat Show

A chat show is a type of show that is studio based, and has people appear to talk about their everyday issues. Shows like this usually has a host that is very judgmental to keep the audience entertained. There are tools that are frequently used in shows like this such as  paternity tests and lie detectors. In all of the show they include a live studio audience who guide the viewers with their reactions, boos and cheers, to show the viewer how to feel.



At 1:05 they edit this very quickly, cutting to all of the peoples reactions, showing that they are are very bored, they showed them mainly because they wanted to tell the audience how to feel when watching, showing that what the phone caller was saying was very boring, which could lead to the audience getting bored. They use the camera very professionally, we notice at 0:03 that they are keeping the camera steady, making sure that it is facing directly on the hosts face, this shows the audience can see clearly all the reactions that the host is making, and having the camera steady makes it more enjoyable to watch, rather than having it shaking through the whole video.  They have a use of expert when they have a host that seems to know a lot about the topics that are on the show, he shows that he knows what he is talking about at 1:26 where he states that the man could not know where the body is, this makes the show more amusing for the audience, since they can see the host is very intelligent and is someone they can trust. 


Magazine Show

A magazine show is a type of show that brings together an amount of short facts and segments into a studio setting. They usually have guests that are experts and have studio performances or demonstrations mixed together with VT packages and live links.



This magazine show starts off at 0:03 with the calm music, which starts off the show on a calm tempo, and gets the viewer watching very relaxed straight away, so they enjoy the show already, just when it starts, having music at the beginning that the viewer will find enjoyable, will make them enjoy the rest of the show. They have a use of experts with their host being an expert on the topics that she takes on with her guests, she shows that she has knowledge on drunk driving at 3:42, which shows the people in the audience, and the audience that the host knows what to say about the topic, and everything she is saying is something that the audience can agree with. The use of editing in this show is very slow paced, at 10:41 they have a very slow tempo, to build suspense to make the viewer wonder if the child will go with the man, it builds a lot of tension and makes them want to see if the mother will notice.
